The Fortress of Salzburg, the German Festung Hohensalzburg, is a medieval fortress overlooking the city of Salzburg from the top of Festungsberg. With more than 7,000 square meters of built area (more than 14,000 square meters if one includes the ramparts) it is one of the largest fortresses in Europe, which has survived almost intact. It is visited each year by about 950,000 people, a fact which makes it the second most visited monument in Austria outside Vienna, after the Basilica of Mariazell.
