Originally built in the 13th century, the great canonical was not the product of the need of some ladies of a big house, but was instead created as a defensive fortification. Despite his martial background, its position on top of a verdant hill, the forest gave very romantic. Over the centuries the castle was added and rebuilt a number of times that give a bit 'of a varied sense of design, but losing none of its beauty. While the original owner of the castle is known, the estate has been passed down from a number of Croatian nobles before being delivered to the Croatian Government in 1950.
In 1953 the Trakošćan Castle was opened to the public as a museum that houses a number of historical events on the area, the castle, and the Croatian history in general. An artificial lake was also built at the foot of the hill makes the view even more spectacular from the castle.
