The former Liechtenstein and later Dietrichstein chateau, which stands on a prominent rock cliff, has been a dominant feature of Mikulov for centuries.

These were replaced by the Dietrichstein family at the end of the 16th century and during their reign the castle gained its present appearance after a fire in 1719. In 1945, when the German army retreated, the castle burnt down to the ground, but thanks to the care of the Association for the Reconstruction of Mikulov Castle it was demandingly repaired in the 1950s. The chateau library and the ancestral hall are among the most interesting parts of the chateau. Nowadays the chateau is the seat of the Regional Museum in Mikulov and you can find here several interesting exhibitions.
