Highclere Castle is an English country house, whose park was designed by Capability Brown in 1774. The estate of a thousand acres (405 hectares) is located in the English county of Hampshire, about 5 miles (8.04672 km) south Newbury. It is the country residence of the Earl of Carnarvon and the main setting of the TV series Downton Abbey.
The castle stands on the site of an older house built on the foundations of the medieval palace of the bishops of Winchester, the land owner for eight centuries. Since 1679, the castle is home to the Carnarvon family and is open to the public from 1 July 2012.
