Roquetaillade Castle (France)
Nouvelle-Aquitaine See list of castles in Francia
Since prehistoric times, the site of Roquetaillade has been occupied by humans as evidenced by the troglodyte caves.
The legend says that Charlemagne going towards the Pyrenees made a stop there and built on the rocky peak a wooden fort.
As construction techniques evolved, a first stone castle stood on this site from the 11th century, hence its name "Château de Roquetaillade" meaning "carved on the rock". It then belongs to the Lords of La Mothe who reign supreme over a fortified town including a castle and a church. This city will last until the beginning of the Renaissance.
In the 14th century, in 1306, Gaillard de la Mothe, nephew of Clément V, first Pope in Avignon, was built thanks to the support of his uncle not far from the Vieux castle, a palace fortress combining the new defensive systems and a certain comfort. Since then, this "new" castle of Roquetaillade has never ceased to be inhabited by the same family, even if the family name has changed 5 times over the past 7 centuries.
Today it belongs to the family of Vicomte Sébastien de Baritault du Carpia.
Thus this fortified castle has seen its appearance modernize over time.
