Andrassy Castle (Hungary)

Northern Great Plain     See list of castles in Ungheria

The castle was built by Gyula Andrássy, the first foreign minister of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, between 1880-1885. Designed by Meinig Arthur. [2] [3] The English garden behind the castle was also established at that time, which is still nicely cared for. The multi-tower building carries neo-Gothic-Romantic style features. The castle was built on a hill close to the banks of the Tisza, so it stands out from the floodplain of the floodplain of the Tisza. The park is bordered on the east by the river itself. In accordance with the tastes of the age, a separate front park was established in front of the facade of the building, with trimmed bushings and yew trees, with a beautiful statue of János Fadrusz in the middle (Maiden Escape). [4] In the distance, apart from the garden part, the volcanic cone of Nagykopasz in Tokaj closes the view. The park fits into the landscape.

The area around the castle was once adorned with rose bushes and ornamental shrubs. The garden parts moving away from the castle were created by thinning the former floodplain forest of the Tisza so as to enhance its beauty. There is also a monumental castle in Old Kenesia in a protected floodplain. Count Sándor Andrássy, Member of Parliament, was the last owner of the castle and the huge estate. In 1942, Major Endre Farkas, headmaster of Boldogfai, and his wife, Ms. Klára Lenz, were the owners of the 1,576 cadastral acres in Kocsordos belonging to Tiszadob (1154 cadastral acres belonged to Tiszadob, 422 cadastral acres to Kesznyéten); the manor was bought by Klára Lenz's father, József Lenz, commercial adviser, landowner in Nyékládháza, wholesaler, Count Sándor Andrássy and given as a gift to his daughter and son-in-law. [5] The area of the park decreased after World War II, currently 15 cadastral moons. The castle was turned into an orphanage.

The building is interesting: it has 4 entrances according to the number of seasons, 12 towers according to the number of months, 52 rooms according to the number of weeks and 365 windows according to the number of days. [6]

The famous modern work of art of the castle is the 4.5-meter 4.5-meter panel of the Roma painter Tamás Péli.

Renovation of the castle
The priority project entitled “Cultural and tourist utilization of the Andrássy Castle in Tiszadob and its associated areas” received HUF 1.738 billion in European Union support in 2009 as a key tourism development in the Northern Great Plain region. The development project was carried out by the owner of the property, the Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County Municipality.

The preparation of the renovation of the Andrássy Castle in Tiszadob and the natural environment surrounding the castle for tourism purposes, the planning of a large-scale investment in the listed building was led by Zoboki-Demeter és Társai Építésziroda Kft. And Tibor Balázs (B5 Architect's Office). Within the framework of the priority project, the cultural and tourist development of Andrássy Castle and its park was implemented.

No new facility or part of the building was constructed during the reconstruction. The improvements were aimed at improving the external condition of the building, renovating the internal equipment and increasing the efficiency of the operation.

The renovation project was completed in June 2014, however, due to the delay in obtaining the necessary permits, the castle and park will only be open from 7 December 2015.
