Rovereto Castle (Italy)

Trentino-Alto Adige     See list of castles in Italia

Located in a strategic position, on a rocky hill on the right bank of the Leno, it has the imposing structure of a military stronghold. The first nucleus was built between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries.

In the fifteenth century the complex passed to the Venetians, who transformed the castle into one of the best examples of late medieval fortification in the Alps. With the Venetian defeat of 1509, the stronghold fell into neglect and suffered fire and devastation. During the First World War, it was reduced to barracks and prison and finally damaged. The Italian Historical Museum of War, exhibits some pieces of artillery and a railway cart punched by a grenade. Numerous rooms dedicated to the memory of heroes and war places. Until 1961 he kept the famous Maria Dolens, the Bell of the Fallen, the largest in the world still working and which found its headquarters on the Miravalle hill. Here only the original plaster model remains visible.
