Caerlaverock Castle (Scotland)
Dumfries and Galloway See list of castles in Scozia
13 km far from Dumfries, Caerlaverock Castle is a magnificent ruined castle postcard: surrounded by a large moat, built in red sandstone that glows in the warm light of sunset, has a bizarre triangular shape and despite the deterioration has preserved the gate of access and the two mighty towers.
After suffering attacks and war, today the castle still retains the Renaissance façade of the Nithsdale Lodging, decorated with gables showing vivid mythological and heraldic scenes.
Also the castle is set in a magnificent natural setting, a reserve inhabited by waders and waterfowl with many paths surrounded by nature, ideal for families on outings.
