The Vasa castle Gripsholm has a history of four hundred years. Here are the country's foremost examples of rooms from the time of the Vasa kings and one of Europe's most well-preserved 18th century theaters. The highlights also include the state's portrait collection - Sweden's celebrities hang out at Gripsholm.
The castle was built in the 16th century on the initiative of Gustav Vasa. Here are well-preserved rooms from that era, the most famous being Duke Charles' chamber.
The sights include Gustav III's theater, which the theater king had decorated in one of the castle's round Renaissance towers.
Gripsholm Castle is internationally known for its large collection of portraits - the Swedish State's Portrait Collection - with portraits of significant people from Gustav Vasa's days all the way to our own time.
With the proximity to the nature reserve Gripsholm's deer park and Mariefred with shops, cafés and restaurants, Gripsholm is a popular excursion destination.
