Birseck Castle (Switzerland)
Canton of Basel-Landschaft See list of castles in Svizzera
In 1785 the dilapidated castle served as a backdrop for the landscaped garden. It was destroyed in the revolutionary turmoil and the ruin was integrated into the garden after 1812.
During the restoration of the Hermitage, the ruins of the Birseck Castle served as a substitute for the ancient ruins of the artificial tower and became a new attraction. A circular tower, a small chapel with neo-Gothic wall paintings and the courtyard with hedges, trees and roses invoke romantic thoughts from the time of the cavalry and invite you to a dream walk through the castle. In 1812 a Hall of the Knights with neogothic decorations was built in the ruins. These wall paintings were restored in 2007 directly from the original works and the Birseck Castle was renovated.
