Inhabited by the Chabannes family since 1430, the magnificent castle of La Palice dominates the Besbre valley and the roofs of the city of Lapalisse. Crossing the entrance portico, you are greeted by the refinement of the façade and the large courtyard of honor, which offer a suggestive introduction to the history and elegance of the residence.
The architecture of the castle is a fascinating mosaic of eras and styles: on the left is the Gothic chapel of the 15th century, whose crypt houses the tombs of the Chabannes family; in the center, the Renaissance wing, built in the 16th century in red brick, gives a touch of elegance; on the right, the feudal part, dating back to the 11th-13th century, with its towers and robust curtains, bears witness to the medieval past of the fortress.
The interior, which can be visited through a guided tour, reveals rooms rich in history and charm. Among these, the Golden Hall stands out, embellished with a magnificent Renaissance coffered ceiling and sumptuous ancient tapestries. The visit continues with the great hall, the library and the chapel, each of which tells centuries of noble life.
To complete the experience, an enchanting shaded park, enriched by ponds and majestic centuries-old trees, offers a corner of peace and beauty, making the visit to the castle of La Palice a true journey through time.
