Pillnitz Castle (Germany)

Saxony     See list of castles in Germania

After the Renaissance castle was destroyed by fire in 1818, the Palazzo Nuovo was built in its place. Oberlandbaumeister Christian Friedrich Schuricht designed a building that would fit perfectly into the palace complex. In the new palace there is also the dining room, consecrated in 1823.

As the only classicist domed building in Dresden, the domed hall with its wide access to the garden of pleasures has above all a representative character. Six self-supporting Corinthian columns on each side of the square room carry the suspended coffered dome with the open lantern. Carl Christian Vogel von Vogelstein painted the walls with his views from Rome and influenced by Nazarism.

Could not miss a kitchen in the New Palais, completed in 1830. The kitchen of the royal court had to supply daily both the royal family and the court of servants, that is at least 70 people. The Royal Court Kitchen is strictly structured according to the activities: "Mouth side", "Frying side", "Cooking side", "Spickkammer", "Meat vault", "Zehrgarten", "Ice" and "Kitchen writing". In each kitchen area there was a "mouth cook", "cook" and "roast cook" manager with additional staff. A total of 27 employees worked in the court kitchen, all coordinated by the cookery master and his employee.

In the fire of the old Renaissance castle in 1818, much of the kitchen inventory was lost, so much so that the court kitchen had to be renovated. When the royal family abdicated in 1918, the kitchen was used for other purposes. The spatial structure and nearly the entire inventory were destroyed or lost at the beginning of the reconstruction in 2000. Written sources, images and archaeological traces of construction helped with the restoration. Today's furniture and kitchen machine parts are historically correct replicas, equipment is purchases. The copper in the kitchen on display comes from the Saxon court. Since 2003, the Royal Court Kitchen shines in its new "old" glory.

With the construction of the New Palace, Oberland master builder Christian Friedrich Schuricht created an eastern closure of the Pillnitz palace complex, in whose north wing a new single-nave Catholic court chapel was set up between 1823 and 1829.

Despite its simple appearance, the court chapel with its rich furnishings and wall paintings by Carl Christian Vogel von Vogelsteins demonstrate the religiousness and representative claim of the royal family. The open-air Marian cycle, which the painter created together with the students of the Dresden Academy, has adorned the Catholic Chapel since 1829. On June 16, 1830, Bishop Mauermann consecrated the Chapel of the Holy Trinity. It is still used today by the Catholic Church.
