St. Lawrence Fortress - Dubrovnik (Croatia)
Dubrovnik-Neretva County See list of castles in Croazia
Fort Lovrijenac (Fort of St. Lawrence) is located at the western side of the Old Town, outside the city walls on a 37 meters high cliff. It's also known as "Dubrovnik's Gibraltar".
Fort Lovrijenac has a triangular shape with three levels and was defended with 10 large cannons, being the largest and most famous called "Lizard". The walls facing the sea are up to 12 meters thick, but on the eastern side of the fortress facing Dubrovnik the walls are only 60 centimetres thick. Such construction was done purposely, in case the Fort was taken by an enemy it could easily be destroyed directly from the city walls and fort Bokar.
Above the door leading to the fortress there is a famous inscription carved in stone: “Non Bene Pro Toto Libertas Venditur Auro” (“Freedom cannot be sold for all the gold of the world”).
