Burg Thun (Italy)

Portraits of Princes Bishops, silverware, porcelain, glass, carriages, all contribute to create the atmosphere of the agitated life of rural nobility. Built in the mid-thirteenth century, the castle dominates from the top of a hill the Val di Non, particularly impressive in spring, during the flowering of apple trees.

Erected on a hill, a few kilometers from Vigo di Ton, Castel Thun is one of the most famous castles of Trentino. Inside it preserves intact the original 16th century furnishings, together with precious art collections, an important library and a rich art gallery.
 
HISTORY

For centuries it was the magnificent residence of the Thun family, one of the oldest and most powerful families of the Trentino nobility. In 1992 it finally became property of the Province of Trento, which in 2010, after extensive restoration, opened it to the public and today is part of the network of castles which is headed by the Buonconsiglio castle of Trento.
 
THE CASTLE

The structure, in the heart of the Val di Non, is surrounded by a complex system of fortifications composed of lookout towers, lunar bastions, moat and roundabout. The Spanish Door stands out, decorated with a suggestive ashlar.

On the ground floor there are the public rooms and at the first the rooms of the lords, among which we find, still richly furnished, the Stanza del Vescovo, entirely covered in Cimbrian wood.
