Munot Fortress (Switzerland)
Canton of Schaffhausen See list of castles in Svizzera
A historic center with 171 oriels and facades of artistically painted houses, to which is added a superb fortress in which from 1377 a guardian provides for the maintenance of order and legality. A visit to the city of Schaffhausen seems like a journey back in time.
On the site where the commercial boats had to throw more than a thousand years ago, because the Rhine Falls prevented navigation, the city of Schaffhausen arose. And if there were no modern men, shops and electricity in the alleys of the old town, one could almost imagine going back in time up to that time. Many houses in the city, with their sumptuously painted facades and countless bay windows, date back to the Renaissance.
Munot, the symbol of the city, dominates over everything. The circular fortress was built in the 16th century. Even more ancient than the current fortress is the Office of the guardian of the fortress. The list of guardians follows backwards almost without gaps until 1377.
